Skylar Campbell
Born: Laguna Beach, California
Trained: Victor and Tatiana Kasatsky in Orange County, California

If you could live in any other time period, which would you choose?
I’m pretty happy in the time period I’m in now, but I often picture myself living in the 1970s.

Could you tell us 3 random things we don’t know about you?
-I’m a bit of a neat freak.
-I love to play my drums on weekends.
-My parents were also professional ballet dancers.

What would you have done as a career if ballet hadn’t come your way?
Not sure exactly what I would be doing. It would probably be something creative, involving a theatre, stage or music.Skylar Campbell, First SoloistHow do you handle criticism?
It only drives me to work harder, to achieve the best version of myself.

Milk chocolate or dark?
Milk

What was the last thing you changed your mind about?
About liking milk chocolate. DARK is the only way. IMG_4448
What’s your definition of a successful ballet dancer?
Defining success lies within the dancer. I don’t know if reaching the rank of Principal Dancer or having the opportunity to dance a dream role is success. We have to remind ourselves that this career is short and every moment we step onstage, wherever it may be, is a true accomplishment. Therefore, I define success with clarity of purpose.Skylar CampbellWhat’s your guilty pleasure song that’ll make you rock out no matter where you are?
Hook by Blues Traveler (yeah, nobody knows who that is)

Thoughts on dating: inside the dance world, or out?
I have been with my girlfriend Jaclyn Oakely, who is in the Corps de Ballet, for 3 years now. It seems we must be doing something right. IMG_4368
What is your favorite memory of being onstage?
Having the opportunity to be onstage with my parents in Jean Grand-Maître’s Ancient Airs. I was about 5 years old and even though I didn’t do much, I still had a blast.

Dream role?
Ulysses Dove’s Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven

Words of advice for young dancers?
I’d rather be moved by something than impressed. Never sacrifice details with over emoting and don’t let intimidation prevent you from asking questions from more experienced dancers

Is Skylar okay? He was out of the cast of Romeo and Juliet this afternoon and at a recent Saturday night performance of The Winter's Tale.
